What to say

It's not that I don't want to blog. It's that I'm having a hard time figuring out what to say.

My life now consists of auditioning and babysitting. And now rehearsing. I'm taking a break from auditioning (thank the good Lord above) because I booked a show. Woo hoo! It's a Wonderful Life, the musical. Didn't know that was a musical till I auditioned for it. I'll be understudying the role of Violet. She's the trampish character (modestly trampish, more like excessively flirtatious). Remember from the movie? George Bailey gives her money, but she selflessly returns it in the end. Rehearsals start tomorrow.

The babysitting is calling forth my maternal instinct, which has since been buried deep under discontent and nomadic tendencies. But the biological clock is ticking away, ticking, ticking away, and I actually told Seth we have to be in a position to have children in a year.

I quickly reconsidered, and sanity (or is it insanity?) resumed its place in the forefront of my mind.

I'm reading Jane Eyre and have fallen in love with it.

I'm editing a book for my Renaissance man of a husband, who just decides one day that he wants to write a novel, and so does. And it's the funniest thing I've ever read....ever.

And I'm trying to figure out how to fit my blender and good set of knives into my new kitchen down the hall from my old kitchen, and counting the days until my dad comes again to hang more shelves. He's the greatest shelf hanger of all time. Seth can write a novel but doesn't really like hanging shelves.

Last but not least, I had the worst audition of my life today. The worst...ever. Synopsis: "Mean casting director is relentlessly harsh and condescending to a flustered auditionee." First layer of thick skin applied...moving on.

I had such a hard time that I've given up for the moment. See the latest entry in my blog if you want more details. ("Wow, look at that. I'd forgotten that you even had a blog.")

Anyway, it's good to hear from you again! Been wondering how everything is going there for y'all.

Congrats on the show. I don't know anything about the stage version, but I love the movie version of It's a Wonderful Life. And I do remember Violet, very well. (Since I've watched the movie at least once a year for many years now...). BTW, please explain what exactly an understudy is. I have a general idea, but would be interested to hear exactly what that means in your case.

Sorry to hear about the harsh audition experience. I suspect that you knew such things potentially awaited you there, but I'm sure that doesn't make it any easier to actually endure.

You and Seth are in our prayers!

Congrats on getting the role.

It sounds like you probably wouldn't have wanted to work for that director anyhow (at least until getting used to NY brashness), but maybe that's a poor assumption. At least I don't think I would want a boss like that.

Is Seth getting a babysitting job, too? ;-)

C-Ham, an understudy is an actor who learns a specific role so that, in the case that the actor cast in that role is not able to go on, the understudy fills in. Usually the understudy is cast in the ensemble, which is my situation, so I learn both the ensemble part and the understudy role.

MB, you're right. I'm realizing, though, after screaming thoughts of injustice, that I can (and should) take from what she said and learn from her. However harsh the criticism was, today I reached a place where I can separate her lousy attitude from the criticism given, and use it for my good.

And actually, I did drag Seth to a babysitting job once, and he was really good at it. A guy flew in from CA to run the NY marathon, and we took his three kids out for a day in the city. It was really fun.

Amy, thanks!

Audrey, I'm glad you think Violet is intriguing! You're a sweetheart. Miss ya!

Hey, Congratulations, Amber! That's good news about the gig! I wish you the best of luck. I'll be coming to see you on Broadway before too long! (I remember hearing you sing at your wedding. Incredible.)

Yay! Wonderful news about the part! Good Luck with the knives and the blender--that's a tough decision. I still move mine around on occasion. ;)

congratulations, that is exciting! Sorry about the busy-ness and hectic schedule.

Thanks, the Stan! Hope you can make it to NYC even before my hopeful B'way debut. =-)

(The Stan refers to when Seth and I got up and sang with the band at our wedding reception. Gotta love R-E-S-P-E-C-T)

Narci, unfortunately my decision determines the survival of the blender. It entails either throwing the blender away or buying more drawers for the kitchen. Grrrr

KD, thanks! The schedule's not too bad, actually. Now that I'm in rehearsals. The audition schedule is what kills me, since then I have to get up IN THE 5's!!!

Congratulations, Amber!!! I'm so excited for you guys. I know you must be really busy, so take care of yourself. And don't worry too much about that biological clock...you're still young! I had my first at 32 and my second at 34, and I don't regret waiting.
Good luck with blender decision too. Do you have any room under your bed to store it? That's where I stash things I don't know what to do with. :)

Amber,
Congratulations on your role! That's awesome.

I am sorry about the nasty old mean director, though.

Uh...

It doesn't take a year to get in that position...unless there's an old acting injury impeding or something.

I've got books. I'll send them.

Susanne, if only we had a bed...ours pulls out from the sofa. Ahhh the joys of living in NYC.

Kat, thanks!

SG, ...ahem...no old acting injury....see what I meant was...I'm telling.
