The only way to actually work in new york for the rest of the 95% of us not on broadway/off broadway is to self produce...but equity makes it soooooo difficult with outdated codes and harsh enforcement. I no longer support equity because of this.
Screw AEA!! I wish I could get all my money back from them!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354172197004069242.post-38005904509250273772008-10-01T20:26:00.000-06:002008-10-01T20:26:00.000-06:00Funny Girl,Yeah, I'd agree. Equity seems like it would hurt more than help in SATX.

And as far as why Equity cares...The woman's an Equity member, but because it's not an Equity show, they don't deduct Equity working dues out of her paycheck. So she's working as an Equity actor and not paying Equity for it.

That's the best explanation I can come up with.

And if they let one person do that, it gets out of control, everyone's doing it, and Equity's losing money.

Other than that I'm not sure why they'd care so much. But, apparently, they do.FancyPantshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00051762758211575101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354172197004069242.post-62046871085457657082008-10-01T10:34:00.000-06:002008-10-01T10:34:00.000-06:00Down here in Tejas I can think of almost NO reason...Down here in Tejas I can think of almost NO reason to be Equity. However, last spring a theater here did an extended run of a musical. All of the actresses joined Equity. But there are no theaters that hire Equity here in SATX. So once that show was over, these girls were sunk.

I just had to take over a number in our show b/c it got back to the writer that we had an equity actress singing ONE SONG in our show. (She's the music director, and she jumped up from the piano to do a 2 minute number in the middle of the show.) How it got from SATX to NYC I have no idea. But faster than you can say "cut" she was out and I was in.

I see it two ways:

First, she knew the rules, so she can't be upset for getting caught. (Of course, there's been all sorts of passive-aggressiveness toward me for taking over. Not that it's my choice.)

Second, I don't understand why Equity cares what people are doing in cities where there is no equity!! Do you??

Well, that was a book. But you struck a nerve and I had to reply. MUAH!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
